POSITIVE IMPACT

Our ongoing journey.

RESPONSIBLY MADE

Here, at Tatjana von Stein, we are committed to a greener future. Behind every creation is a team dedicated to minimising our footprint while maintaining superior quality. As research continues and technology advances, we are dedicated to change, adaptation, and evolution across each area of the business to ensure we can streamline processes, minimise waste and increase efficiency.

Our purpose is to ensure the designs we create not only stand the test of time but prioritise responsible design principles from the outset. In partnering with independent artisanal workshops to cut across the mass manufacturing cycles which plague the industry today, we have full control over the production methods used and the materials sourced. In understanding the responsibility we have as designers, and with a mission to create heirlooms of the future, we know we can contribute towards a more accountable creative sector.

Our journey is just beginning and, while we are very aware that there is room for improvement in reducing our carbon footprint, we are committed to sharing our experience with you to ensure full transparency is maintained. As it is often quoted, sustainability is a journey, not a destination, and through effective changes one step at a time, we will continue to fight for a future which protects and serves both people and planet simultaneously.

We are also dedicated to creating a more diverse industry and will be investing back into the creative sectors to ensure we can support equal opportunities for all. With an honest approach and our unwavering commitment to a sustainable design industry, we will be refining our processes year on year. Design can be a powerful force for change and here, at Tatjana von Stein, we hope to exemplify that.

ARTISANAL EXPERTISE

Collaborating with external partners has been key in sustaining our values of quality, transparency, and craft excellence. We have partnered with Aurige, the French heritage conservation group who, with 78 years of experience, have brought together a collective of specialist artisans who uphold design integrity through a strong understanding of creating products that are made to last.

Being the only company in France which offers a complete selection of trades dedicated to heritage restoration, we are proud to work alongside Aurige and the extensive knowledge and grasp of craft they have. Not only does this provide access to some of the best artisans across the country, but it also gives us confidence knowing that we are helping to preserve valuable skillsets and techniques which have been used for centuries. Aurige is committed to offering pathways for young apprentices to learn such crafts helping to pass these dexterities down and sustaining them for generations to come.

QUALITY MATERIALS

Using the finest materials possible, we manufacture each item to order to ensure maximum efficiency of all resources used. Working closely with our makers and artisans, we opt for materials which are located as closely to the workshops as possible. Through sourcing locally where possible, we can minimise our logistical footprint as well as ensuring we obtain the highest quality ingredients possible.

With each design, we publicly list every material used to provide full transparency to our clients. With our furniture manufacturing studio based in France and our textile workshops based in Portugal, we are committed to working with local creative communities who fully understand and respect the materials they are working with.

SUPPORTING THE ARTS

In a personal mission to give back to the creative sector, we are partnering with the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) to encourage the prosperity of the performing arts. Seeking to support the wider creative community, we are eager to not only explore the intersection of different art forms in each catalogue of work but we also hope to showcase how different sectors can support each other.

Understanding the challenges and constraints one can face in the early stages of your creative journey, von Stein recognises that in supporting others it will allow true creative talent to come to the forefront of the global scene resulting in a more diverse and equal industry. This dedicated partnership with the RSA will also actively work towards finding solutions to the critical social and environmental issues we face today.

In a bid to help diversify the creative industry, we are also part of United in Design – a charitable organisation set up to address the lack of diversity within the interior design sector. We understand the importance of culture and how it connects us on a global scale and, in contributing towards this, we can continue to learn from each other and share inspiration along the way.

FUTURE PROGRESS

Moving forward we are committed to a future where circularity, transparency and quality underlines every collection we create. As industries change, research continues and technology advances, we will ensure that our impact as a company is continually monitored so we can be as efficient as possible with a minimum footprint while serving the creative communities we are a part of.

Fuelled by a strong purpose for change, we will continue to collaborate with independent ateliers and local suppliers to allow for increased control over our production methods. Through a bespoke approach and an artisanal outlook, we will continue to present alternatives to the mass-produced designs of today. Not only do we pride ourselves on individuality, but we also know it is our strength.

As a small team, we will be striving to implement change where budgets and time restraints allow. With data being a key fundamental to improvement, we will also be looking to provide further clarity on the environmental impact of each piece we create. Our workshop has calculated the carbon footprint of each piece and from this we will be setting goals to ensure this is reduced year on year. We look forward to sharing this journey with you and move forward with an open mind, committed to continually learning and refining our offering here at Tatjana von Stein.
